“Fishbone
aisles” are touted as a more efficient pallet
rack design for warehouses and distribution centers. Studied
by Russell Meller from the University of Arkansas and Kevin
Gue from Auburn University, fishbone aisles help solve the
need for companies who must pick and ship items very quickly.
This especially comes in handy for companies taking online
orders that require extra-fast processing.
In
their studies, Meller and Gue noticed that traditional warehouse
pallet rack designs stressed storage density, but were inefficient
in terms of retrieving items. Meller and Gue saw that warehouse
employees took a lot of time traveling up and down parallel
aisles. These workers were blocked from crossing over to an
aisle next to them, basically creating a grocery-store effect.
A
Fishbone Aisle setup is one way to solve this problem. To
create fishbone aisles, Meller and Gue cut two diagonal aisles
through the entire warehouse. If seen from above, fishbone
aisles look like a “V” has been cut into warehouse
aisles from top to bottom. Studies showed that the ability
for workers to cross over in the “V” aisles reduced
picking costs more than 20 percent.
