Working
around pallet rack requires employees
who are properly trained and who follow strict safety guidelines.
Pallet rack safety is so important that the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA), part of the U.S. Department
of Labor, has many recommendations about proper pallet rack
procedures. Some important OSHA suggestions about pallet rack
include the following:
- Do
not take shortcuts: One example of a dangerous shortcut
is when workers reach across pallet rack to pick up an item.
Improper reaching puts stress on the back and shoulders,
which could cause an injury. OSHA recommends that employees
walk around a pallet to pick up items properly. Employees
should always use ergonomic techniques around pallet rack.
- Unexpected
exertions are dangerous: If an employee picks up a box that
is heavier than he or she expected, or if a box falls apart,
it could result in an injury to the employee. OSHA recommends
that companies clearly label every box with its weight,
and also tell suppliers to send items in sturdy boxes.
- Proper
footwear is important: Warehouse employees stand for long
hours on concrete surfaces, resulting in muscle problems,
tendon problems, and fatigue. A worker’s feet are
also at risk of falling items. OSHA stresses that proper
footwear is vital for warehouse employees. Warehouse managers
should educate their employees about wearing shoes with
good shock absorption, non-skid soles, solid support, and
adequate padding. Those employees working with inappropriate
footwear should be moved away from areas where their feet
are at risk.
