to discuss the various pallet rack options available on the
market today. For quick reference, here’s a handy list
of what the different styles of pallet rack are used for:
-
Selective Rack: provides immediate access to 100 percent
of pallets, but also uses the most space, meaning low storage
density.
-
Pallet Flow Rack: offers first-in, first-out inventory and
automatic rotation of stock.
-
Pushback Rack: has high storage density for goods that do
not need rotation because it operates with last-in, first-out
inventory.
-
Drive-In Pallet Rack: a very dense style of storage often
found in cold storage. Forklifts drive directly into the
rack structure from one side, resulting in last-in, first-out
storage.
-
Drive-Through Rack: the same as drive-in pallet rack, only
forklifts are able to enter the rack from both sides which
offers fast access and dense storage.
-
Double Deep Rack: operates on the same concept as selective
rack, however there’s more density because pallets
are arranged two-deep instead of one-deep. They usually
operate with last-in, first-out retrieval.
-
Narrow Aisle Rack: with the invention of special forklifts
that can be driven into a very small space, very narrow
aisle rack systems offer 100 percent accessibility to all
merchandise but with much more compact storage than selective
rack.
-
Cantilever Rack: with a completely open front, cantilever
is focused almost exclusively on storing long, bulky items
such as sheet metal, rolls of carpet, plumbing pipes, bars,
plywood, furniture, and lumber.
-
Portable Pallet Racks: not as well known as other types
of rack, portable racks can be adapted to just about any
type of storage, from dense to selective. You also can break
down and store portable racks which is handy for inconsistent
inventory amounts.
