Pallet
rack is an underappreciated staple of today’s business
world. Without pallet rack and pallets,
it would be impossible to serve the millions of customers
who expect full shelves in retail stores and instant shipping
after ordering items online. How could businesses keep up
with the demand if there was no such thing as pallet rack
or pallets?
Some
form of pallet rack and pallets has been in existence for
about 100 years. Just like trucks were invented to carry merchandise,
the invention of pallets was a logical step in material handling.
Pallets have not changed much over the years. These are the
most common types of pallets in use today:
- Wood
pallets: History’s first pallets were made of wood,
and wood is still, by far, the most popular type of pallet
in use today.
- Plastic
pallets: Plastic pallets make up about two percent of the
pallet market, and they are typically made with HDPE or
PVC. Plastic pallets are durable and easy to clean, but
they are several times more expensive than wooden pallets.
- Paper
pallets: Less than one percent of pallets are made from
a paper product such as corrugated cardboard and molded
wood pulp. These paper-type pallets weigh less than other
types of pallets and they are easily recycled.
- Metal
pallets (wire mesh pallets): Made with steel and aluminum,
metal pallets comprise less than one percent of the pallet
market.
